Porutham parthal is one of the first steps before moving an alliance forward in a Tamil Gounder wedding.
\n
Horoscope Match
\nPorutham parthal in Tamil means checking the compatibility of both the groom-to-be and bride-to-be by looking into their respective horoscopes. The boy and girl’s horoscopes are matched to see if there is compatibility in ten to twelve critical aspects - birth, strength, family, personality, age, attachment, compassion, humility, wealth and knowledge.
\n
Reading the Stars
Horoscope matching is done (mostly by a reverent astrologer or elder who has experience in horoscope reading) in order to ensure that the stars of both individuals entering into marriage are a suitable match for each other and do not overlap bad phases in their lifetime. This is particularly important as it is believed that the birth star of the husband has an impact on his wife’s life and vice versa. Most divorces happen when both the man and woman have bad phases at the same time which forces them to take a decision against the marriage.
\n
What’s Needed for Porutham Parthal
\nThe date and time of the birth of the groom-to-be and bride-to-be are sufficient to start the Porutham process. Other factors that play a critical role in matching and fixing an alliance are economic and social status of the family, financial stability, earning and education.
\n
\nIf the horoscopes are a clear match and both families are satisfied with each other, porutham parthal is complete and Sagunam Parthal is the next step.
\n
","summary":""},"path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals/tamil/goundar/tamil-gounder-pre-wedding-rituals-porutham-parthal"},"field_image":{"alt":"Porutham Parthal Ritual in Tamil Gounder Wedding Rituals"},"relationships":{"field_tags":[{"id":"8e750a76-5d69-5fd0-aa6d-b8df9ace5f13","name":"Goundar","weight":3},{"id":"b8620fe1-4b58-5a2f-b071-2c4b26e48b21","name":"Tamil","weight":0},{"id":"f7342040-b19d-5fff-a235-4e49be5a6db6","name":"Wedding Rituals","weight":34}],"field_image":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/a4c0de5042e8520932b5354c4c483968/9dc27/porutham%2520partaal.jpg","srcSet":"/static/a4c0de5042e8520932b5354c4c483968/25b50/porutham%2520partaal.jpg 75w,\n/static/a4c0de5042e8520932b5354c4c483968/aabdf/porutham%2520partaal.jpg 150w,\n/static/a4c0de5042e8520932b5354c4c483968/9dc27/porutham%2520partaal.jpg 300w,\n/static/a4c0de5042e8520932b5354c4c483968/32fd5/porutham%2520partaal.jpg 450w,\n/static/a4c0de5042e8520932b5354c4c483968/0f3a1/porutham%2520partaal.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"}}}}}},{"id":"af25b04f-3415-58c5-ae7b-4665bd798c71","drupal_id":"3e12bdaa-c5d2-4a53-8592-62e445c49acf","title":"Pre Wedding Ritual In Tamil Gounder Weddings - Sagunam Parthal","created":"2020-08-29T22:32:04+00:00","body":{"processed":"
Once the Porutham parthal is complete (potential bride and groom’s horoscopes are mutually exchanged, matched and consented), the next pre wedding step is Sagunam Parthal(Looking out for good omens). In the earlier days, the wedding used to be conducted only at the bride’s place and hence only close family and community members used to be invited. Traditionally, the invitation cards were distributed by the Kudimagan (citizen) who represents the bride or the groom’s family to extend an invitation on behalf of them.
\n\n
The Importance of Lagna Patrika (Wedding Invite) in a Tamil Gounder Wedding
\nEarlier, families considered it a great honour and prestige if the wedding invitation was handed to them. The Kudimagan would tell the number of people expected to attend from the invited families. Also, those who did not receive the cards would not attend it and even choose to boycott the wedding. The Kudimagan played an important role in marriages, even if the bride or the groom’s family personally invite, guests would not go for the wedding unless invited by the Kudimagan.
\n\n
The Changing Scenes in Tamil Gounder Weddings
\nHowever, the recent times we see invites flying out to friends, neighbours and other people who are not part of the Kongu community, hence the role of the Kudimagan has become less significant. This has also expanded the invitee’s list for the wedding and hence for the want of more space, weddings are being conducted in marriage halls.
\n\n
The traditional way of extending invitations in Gounder weddings has now changed and these days cards are printed and sent by courier or posts. Only close relatives and friends are personally handed wedding cards, others are called by using mobile phones, or sent the invite by post or through email. Moreover, there is no way to know how many from a family will attend the marriage and makes it difficult to manage the guests unlike in olden days when the Kudimagan used to get a count.
\n
","summary":""},"path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals/tamil/goundar/tamil-gounder-pre-wedding-ritual-lagna-patrika-wedding-invite"},"field_image":{"alt":"Lagna Patrika in Tamil Gounder Wedding - Invitation"},"relationships":{"field_tags":[{"id":"8e750a76-5d69-5fd0-aa6d-b8df9ace5f13","name":"Goundar","weight":3},{"id":"b8620fe1-4b58-5a2f-b071-2c4b26e48b21","name":"Tamil","weight":0},{"id":"f7342040-b19d-5fff-a235-4e49be5a6db6","name":"Wedding Rituals","weight":34}],"field_image":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/37c0dc93418aafe010dafeddad71acb2/9dc27/lagna%2520pathirikai-01.jpg","srcSet":"/static/37c0dc93418aafe010dafeddad71acb2/25b50/lagna%2520pathirikai-01.jpg 75w,\n/static/37c0dc93418aafe010dafeddad71acb2/aabdf/lagna%2520pathirikai-01.jpg 150w,\n/static/37c0dc93418aafe010dafeddad71acb2/9dc27/lagna%2520pathirikai-01.jpg 300w,\n/static/37c0dc93418aafe010dafeddad71acb2/32fd5/lagna%2520pathirikai-01.jpg 450w,\n/static/37c0dc93418aafe010dafeddad71acb2/0f3a1/lagna%2520pathirikai-01.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"}}}}}},{"id":"405c80b9-9fc7-541b-a9d8-2959927e4317","drupal_id":"2aeac059-3171-4b9e-8953-45553ce60972","title":"Three Day Wedding Rituals In Tamil Gounder Community","created":"2020-08-30T00:10:01+00:00","body":{"processed":"
The Tamil Kongu Vellalar kalyanam (wedding) is celebrated for three consecutive days. Here we can find a brief about what happens on those three days of the wedding.
\n\n
The Three day Wedding Rituals in Tamil Gounder Weddings
Day 1
Naal Virundhu: It is the first day of marriage - a feast is hosted by the immediate relatives (cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents) of the bride and groom. This is especially for the bride and groom families to celebrate the wedding and also create a friendly atmosphere between the immediate relatives of both sides.
\n\n
Day 2
\nThis is the second day of the wedding and the Gounder community being a close-knit group offers to help the bride’s family on marriage-related work before and while the wedding is taking place. They help in marriage arrangements such as the erection of the pandal (temporary shed), hairdressing of the bridegroom by the Kudimagan (Barber), and a formal wedding announcement by beating the drums takes place. The drum beating in the earlier days was done by the Kudimagan who would walk through the village making the announcement to all. Nowadays this kind of announcement is hardly in place. It still exists in some villages but the urban crowd doesn’t practice it anymore.
\n\n
Muhurtha Kaal: The bride’s relatives make arrangements for the wedding like constructing and decorating the muhurtha pandal, cutting firewood and cooking. The Muhurtha Kaal (pandal) is erected by three Arumaikaarars (Kongu Vellalar community elders) with the help of the Vannaan (washerman). This indicates that the wedding ceremony will take place the next day. Loud music by the Paraiyars (musicians) adds a festive feel to the day.
\n\n
Day 3
Muhurtham: The third day has the most important wedding rituals for the Tamil Gounder community. The bride and the groom will wear traditional dresses and perform the core ceremony sitting on a platform. The groom will tie the thali or the Mangalya around the neck of the bride, Mangala Vadyams (auspicious musical instruments) are played by paraiyars (people from the paraiya section of the community who play rhythmic beats on their traditional large drums) during the thali tying ceremony. The music by the paraiyars ensures that each and every person attending the wedding ceremony is involved in the happenings at the wedding especially during the muhurtham.
\n\n
Then, the newlyweds exchange garlands which complete the wedding rituals. Many marriage rites like the Tharai Varthal (a father handing over his daughter by pouring water thereby transferring the rights of taking care of her to her newly-wed husband), Kaappu, etc.
\n\n
A Kalyana Virundhu (wedding feast) which is a lavish vegetarian feast on plantain leaves is served to all the guests after the Kongu wedding rituals.
\n
","summary":""},"path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals/tamil/goundar/three-day-wedding-rituals-tamil-gounder-community"},"field_image":{"alt":"Three Day Wedding Rituals in Tamil Gounder Wedding"},"relationships":{"field_tags":[{"id":"8e750a76-5d69-5fd0-aa6d-b8df9ace5f13","name":"Goundar","weight":3},{"id":"b8620fe1-4b58-5a2f-b071-2c4b26e48b21","name":"Tamil","weight":0},{"id":"f7342040-b19d-5fff-a235-4e49be5a6db6","name":"Wedding Rituals","weight":34}],"field_image":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/6f5910da5033f3c075602d4f337159b9/9dc27/Three%2520day%2520wedding-01.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6f5910da5033f3c075602d4f337159b9/25b50/Three%2520day%2520wedding-01.jpg 75w,\n/static/6f5910da5033f3c075602d4f337159b9/aabdf/Three%2520day%2520wedding-01.jpg 150w,\n/static/6f5910da5033f3c075602d4f337159b9/9dc27/Three%2520day%2520wedding-01.jpg 300w,\n/static/6f5910da5033f3c075602d4f337159b9/32fd5/Three%2520day%2520wedding-01.jpg 450w,\n/static/6f5910da5033f3c075602d4f337159b9/0f3a1/Three%2520day%2520wedding-01.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"}}}}}},{"id":"d5714203-0cf7-540e-a7fb-9996d4037a11","drupal_id":"96212c7c-0648-4589-a7de-107774e986a9","title":"Mangala Vaazhthu - The Wedding Song In Tamil Gounder Weddings ","created":"2020-08-30T00:25:36+00:00","body":{"processed":"
Mangala Vaazhthu is a very special wedding song that is recited during all Kongu Vellalar Gounder weddings and is one of the age-old traditional wedding rituals.
\n\n
Significance Of The Song
\nThis song was written by the great poet Kambar and it details all the events that take place during the wedding in the correct sequence. When people approached Kulothunga Chola who was the King then, he said that Cauvery would obey the words of a noble poet.
