This white cloth is called the ‘Antarapata’. The curtain symbolizes their existence as individuals before marriage. While the Antarpata is placed, the girl holds ‘Jeerige Bella’ (Jeera is cumin seeds and Bella is jaggery) in her hand amidst chanting of mantras she stands opposite to the groom with the Antarpata between them and at an auspicious time after the completion of certain rituals the Antarpata is removed, the bride and the groom keep Jeerige Bella on each other’s heads with their right palm and then garland each other.
\n\n
The Bride And The Groom Garland Each Other
\nTraditionally, this moment will be the first time they see each other. The garlanding is also a symbolic way to tell everyone present that they have accepted each other as husband and wife. The garlands are made of Mallige or jasmine and they are not as heavy as in North Indian weddings. The symbolic representation of Jeera (cumin seeds) and Bella (jaggery) is that they both blend well together - just like how a husband and wife need to blend well to form a successful wedding!
\n\n
There are some fun moments in the Varamala for the wedding ceremony. The maternal uncles of both the bride and groom have to ensure that they help their ward put the garland first. A trivia about the ritual is that whoever garlands first will have the upper hand in marriage and thus both maternal uncles do their best to help garland first! Once the Varmala ceremony is completed the pre-wedding rituals are all done with, and the wedding rituals like the Mangalyadharane, the seven steps rituals, etc. take place.
","summary":""},"path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals/kannada/brahmin-madhwa/antarpata-and-varmala-ritual-kannada-brahmin-madhwa-weddings"},"field_image":{"alt":"Antarpata And Varmala in Kannada Brahmin Madhwa Weddings"},"relationships":{"field_tags":[{"id":"18cbe7d9-21ae-5e44-8a8b-f52935a83d39","name":"Brahmin Madhwa","weight":0},{"id":"0a04d05b-76f5-5fee-bc85-310a6234ca7e","name":"Kannada","weight":2},{"id":"f7342040-b19d-5fff-a235-4e49be5a6db6","name":"Wedding Rituals","weight":34}],"field_image":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAAUCAIAAAAC64paAAAACXBIWXMAAAsSAAALEgHS3X78AAADtklEQVQ4yz1UW2/cRBj1b+KhCIkH+iP4BbQvSFWBwFvpA4UiFVQhBDyAVFJUoiAuKU0jSkHdUJo2rNqSbNLc1pdd2zP2eMbj8XW89l44u5H4NLI8njnnO3O++Wy4i/AWQQiJokgpJYSglPiuS3yfED8IAkqpjGVVVkVRJEnCOc+yzAAmDMOIc8DCIIiFKMsSeBaGTr/vmCeMkkpr7E6VKoq8ruvTDXPwabY4luAjw0FIvErP6QWPMCXekIdBns1DCkEGdpYqrXWe59hjQA/AyCsF5wGNAqoSmSNLLBIexSwUYcDDMIFoHskoTITAalVBjYZs1zw+9N1hFARQGFLCGVMyzlWSJVIJlgiexELFcQw7Yl7kmcSLEJBnwBL75DiFBxFjAY05R2Zoq4q8SNUpRZ6muiyLLEtljGeZZ4VKdFkYjmV5A0dGLBg6vm0y4gbuACPhrMzScoGPGY1DIhmFbEH9hAV5EqdKGrHgAfGp61DHwjmrsijSlHmDyB0UAGcpwMy1FWcjrZu6hm/U6TPi5UoZo1GdQqdKmqYZjycY0+lsMpkAhq3jtqmrEmO2iCnWZjOYD19hsIHjCRZi3rQtoIhmBJ4G+Nnsf8h0Op9OmxYJxlgH0hsODPgEGlCg+sBMJ9M5HkxNPRnJseajdDiZtODAd12P2nYMXpQD1THgLSpUFjmQta7bRX5sHZW8Gt4t7PWkf6epYbCSUOjbUUizLEcyXA0jh2KVtE1zKnGuuBnhpZSW7L4vtj9gz77CZRPkqJL2RHvU3Kb+oChL3CkDxUfpdFltbGysra2N2xYWtpNZGrwINt+km0uDv6+lqWLEVpF968YXr7368nc3v9WVRrMYQchwnI8+vGQs4tOPL801tzNJdt0/z9PO21bnCnrBHbrorZWV1YtvLV2//hkMQkcZXOXm+uqF18++dOYVxPKNL6djjcwx2R3cf4N2luzOlarKRRQR8wS8nTsrD3//KS+157pGqFT388vvnj3Te7GTqZR4flWVc7C/A3CwuWR2rmZZgjYU896zrb8+OXm4TELmeb7Re/r0aPOHJ7evidhFE/qmWZQFZCOzff8cefCO+eCqjLmum4hsWfs/O/1/hwePDx6tmicHxrMnj/t9u3frG+ufm/bRutvfSlRWViPu7/d/O+/cu3h47zLngpGe1f1aComrbDnD48O9w/3nxtaPv3TXbu9tPrK2/zB7K0fd5cA/UJmmzvPD9XPHdy/0fn2PBtTufp+SvSTT+CvZlrnb29vd3fkPP60iohTM6M0AAAAASUVORK5CYII=","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/6d4ee9c3971e9f090c461a35abbe5963/630fb/Antarpata%2520And%2520Varmala.png","srcSet":"/static/6d4ee9c3971e9f090c461a35abbe5963/5db04/Antarpata%2520And%2520Varmala.png 75w,\n/static/6d4ee9c3971e9f090c461a35abbe5963/6d161/Antarpata%2520And%2520Varmala.png 150w,\n/static/6d4ee9c3971e9f090c461a35abbe5963/630fb/Antarpata%2520And%2520Varmala.png 300w,\n/static/6d4ee9c3971e9f090c461a35abbe5963/62b1f/Antarpata%2520And%2520Varmala.png 450w,\n/static/6d4ee9c3971e9f090c461a35abbe5963/46604/Antarpata%2520And%2520Varmala.png 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"}}}}}},{"id":"c77e0a7f-6b3c-5a07-a17a-0ad4c571c1af","drupal_id":"5c4af872-6510-45b2-b826-fead5e4ab608","title":"Varapuje Ritual In Kannada Brahmin Madhwa Weddings","created":"2020-10-20T22:20:20+00:00","body":{"processed":"
Honouring the Groom And His Family
\nVarapuje literally means performing pooja for the groom who is also called the ‘vara’. If all goes well, then an auspicious day is fixed for the Nischaya Tamulam(engagement ceremony) where the day of the wedding is finalised. Some families even print beautiful engagement invitation cards to distribute to their near and dear ones. In olden days, the engagement day was the first formal meeting of the boy and girl, but nowadays, only after both the guy and girl consent, the engagement is fixed.
\n\n
The Nischaya Tamulam is the 1st of the wedding rituals in the Lingayat Community of a Kannada wedding. In the Nischaya Tamulam, the groom gives sweets, coconuts, betel leaves, betel nuts and a traditional silk saree which is decorated in a tamulam (a plate) to the bride in exchange for a wedding dhoti and sweets from the bride's side. Traditionally, the Nischaya Tamulam is when the wedding date is fixed making it the official acceptance of the alliance amidst much fanfare. It is also the time when the close relatives of the bride and groom get to know each other.
","summary":""},"path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals/kannada/lingayat/pre-wedding-ritual-kannada-lingayat-weddings-nischaya-tamulam"},"field_image":{"alt":"The engagement ceremony in Kannada Lingayat Weddings"},"relationships":{"field_tags":[{"id":"c566c94d-7149-5253-a8a9-4071b2410345","name":"Lingayat","weight":2},{"id":"0a04d05b-76f5-5fee-bc85-310a6234ca7e","name":"Kannada","weight":2},{"id":"f7342040-b19d-5fff-a235-4e49be5a6db6","name":"Wedding Rituals","weight":34}],"field_image":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":0.7142857142857143,"src":"/static/ab3452c32b138862b54bd2f52cfaeae8/9dc27/The%2520engagement%2520ceremony.jpg","srcSet":"/static/ab3452c32b138862b54bd2f52cfaeae8/25b50/The%2520engagement%2520ceremony.jpg 75w,\n/static/ab3452c32b138862b54bd2f52cfaeae8/aabdf/The%2520engagement%2520ceremony.jpg 150w,\n/static/ab3452c32b138862b54bd2f52cfaeae8/9dc27/The%2520engagement%2520ceremony.jpg 300w,\n/static/ab3452c32b138862b54bd2f52cfaeae8/32fd5/The%2520engagement%2520ceremony.jpg 450w,\n/static/ab3452c32b138862b54bd2f52cfaeae8/0f3a1/The%2520engagement%2520ceremony.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"}}}}}}]},"tags":{"edges":[{"node":{"id":"0a04d05b-76f5-5fee-bc85-310a6234ca7e","name":"Kannada","path":{"alias":"/kannada-wedding-rituals"},"relationships":{"parent":[{"name":"Wedding Rituals","path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals"},"relationships":{"parent":[]}}]}}}]}},"pageContext":{"CategoryId":"0a04d05b-76f5-5fee-bc85-310a6234ca7e","CategoryName":"Kannada","CategoryPath":"/kannada-wedding-rituals"}}}
