This is a unique ritual conducted in the Kannada Gowda marriages where a barber will cut the groom’s hair, trim his nails and give him a shave on the day of the wedding. The barber in return will get cash and clothes, rice, coconut, and bananas as a gift for his service.
\n\n
Significance of Uguru Madichuva Shastra in Kannada Gowda Weddings
\nA ‘Gowda’ is a title given to the leader or an elder in their community and by including this ritual in their weddings they are showing the inclusiveness of other castes which is essential to rule a village. Earlier, a barber who was invited to this nail cutting ceremony considered it as a great honour to provide this service.
\n\n
In modern times, this ritual is conducted by professional barbers who style the hair and shave the facial hair and trim the nails. This ritual is symbolic that the groom is moving from bachelorhood to Grihastha ashram and thus getting ready to take the familial responsibilities. The same nail cutting tradition is followed in the bride's house too.
\n\n
After the conclusion of this event, the groom gets a purity bath also called the Ganga Snana where 'Snana' means bath.
","summary":""},"path":{"alias":"/wedding-rituals/kannada/gowda/uguru-madichuva-shastra-kannada-gowda-weddings"},"field_image":{"alt":"Uguru Madichuva Shastra in Kannada Gowda Weddings"},"relationships":{"field_tags":[{"id":"26a1763e-1cd5-564e-8eda-3ec8ac54d24a","name":"Gowda","weight":1},{"id":"0a04d05b-76f5-5fee-bc85-310a6234ca7e","name":"Kannada","weight":2},{"id":"f7342040-b19d-5fff-a235-4e49be5a6db6","name":"Wedding Rituals","weight":34}],"field_image":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":0.7142857142857143,"src":"/static/375f684e06567cad446ade60c272a620/9dc27/Uguru%2520Madichuva%2520Shastra.jpg","srcSet":"/static/375f684e06567cad446ade60c272a620/25b50/Uguru%2520Madichuva%2520Shastra.jpg 75w,\n/static/375f684e06567cad446ade60c272a620/aabdf/Uguru%2520Madichuva%2520Shastra.jpg 150w,\n/static/375f684e06567cad446ade60c272a620/9dc27/Uguru%2520Madichuva%2520Shastra.jpg 300w,\n/static/375f684e06567cad446ade60c272a620/32fd5/Uguru%2520Madichuva%2520Shastra.jpg 450w,\n/static/375f684e06567cad446ade60c272a620/0f3a1/Uguru%2520Madichuva%2520Shastra.jpg 500w","sizes":"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"}}}}}},{"id":"ac1fdafc-a1cc-541a-b896-ce9d2aaff962","drupal_id":"eff84ffb-1365-44ce-853e-82ab54cf07d8","title":"Dibbane - The Marriage Procession In Kannada Gowda Weddings","created":"2020-10-20T23:01:02+00:00","body":{"processed":"
Dibbane means marriage procession and is similar to the Baraat in North Indian weddings. It is a fun-filled tradition where the groom's relatives let their hair down, dance and sing and get captured on a wedding video.
\n\n
What happens at the Dibbane Procession at Kannada Gowda Weddings?
\nBefore the start of the procession, there is a custom of performing puja to the vehicle that carries the Dibbane. Kumkum, turmeric, and coconut are broken in front of the vehicle and an Aarti is done by the elder ladies to bless the wedding.
\n\n
The wedding procession starts at the groom's house and ends at the wedding venue. Earlier, the wedding procession in villages used to happen in bullock carts but these days fancy vehicles are arranged, Musicians play music all through and the ladies sing songs and make merry. The groom is dressed in a silk dhoti, shirt and Mysore Peta (cap).
\n\n
The girl’s side makes all the necessary arrangements for the Dibbane procession in Indian weddings and also for those participating in it to stay in the wedding hall by providing all the comforts. Once the procession reaches the marriage hall elderly married women along with the bride’s father will go and receive the guests.
\n\n
Women put red-coloured rice called the Akshathe on the groom's head and do ‘Aarti’ to welcome him. The Aarti is also performed to remove all the bad that may befall on the groom. Rosewater is sprinkled, and flowers are offered to all the women by the bride's side.
